What is the UP UP Group
UP UP stands for unveiling power through unpacking privilege.
At the centre of the UP UP group is this question: How can we become aware of our own privileges/powers and keep an eye on them so we can consciously choose to undermine the systems of oppression that hurt us all?
What does the program cover?
Distinctions between Traditional and Modern Power and the creation of self/other policing.
Privilege/power as unearned benefits and as the opposite of oppression.
Types of privilege/power – i.e. white, socio-economic, gender, heterosexual, cis-gender, able-bodied, thin, cultural and Christian, to name a few.
Understanding the intersection of privilege and oppression.
All aspects of our identies interact with one another. We can have privilege/power in some aspects and be oppressed in others.
This program aims to develop a conversation of action not character. Our inherited privileges do not define our character, but how we choose to act to change the system of oppression that affords us those privileges does.
